An Evening with P.J. O'Rourke in conversation with Judy Muller

Don't Vote—It Just Encourages the Bastards

“You can remove morality from politics like you can remove the head from a chicken, and they’ll both keep going—politics much longer than the chicken.”     —P.J. O’Rourke

With more than a million words of trenchant journalism under his byline and more citations in The Penguin Dictionary of Humorous Quotations than any other living writer, P.J. O'Rourke has established himself as America's premier political satirist.  His 14 best-selling books include Parliament of Whores, Give War a Chance, Eat the Rich, The CEO of the Sofa, Peace Kills and On the Wealth of Nations. Both Time and The Wall Street Journal have called him “the funniest writer in America.”  He frequently appears on television, and is a regular panelist on National Public Radio’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.

In his latest book, DON’T VOTE—It Just Encourages the Bastards P.J. O’Rourke turns his sights on the central issue in all of the above:  politics. He’s known as a hard-bitten, cigar-smoking conservative.  But, in fact, he bashes all political persuasions.  Says O’Rourke, “Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.”

Judy Muller is an Emmy Award –winning television correspondent and NPR commentator.  She is on the faculty of the USC Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism and is a regular contributor on NPR’s Morning Edition and a contributing correspondent for KCET’s SoCal Connected.  She was a correspondent on ABC’s Nightline and prior to that was a correspondent on CBS News – on both television and radio.

Net proceeds from this event will benefit the wonderful work of Reading to Kids, a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children in Los Angeles with a love of reading. They organizes reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at seven Los Angeles elementary schools.  Pairs of volunteers read aloud to small groups of children, while their parents receive training on how to encourage their children to read at home.  Kids, parents, teachers, and school libraries receive book donations at the end of the Reading Clubs. To volunteer or learn more, visit: www.readingtokids.org

In addition, the Pearson Foundation through our We Give Books initiative will donate five children’s books for each ticket purchased to Reading to Kids. More information on We Give Books, visit: www.wegivebooks.org.
